Projects – by Elena

elenaApart from lessons, watches and other activities, there are five projects. Before the journey began we had chosen the project we wanted to join. Every Friday the different groups about seven or eight pupils plus their head of project meet each other for one and a half hour and talk and work at different things. I interviewed one member of each project to find out more about their aim, the reason why they chose especially this project and their weekly meetings.

Teresa, what is your project about?
My project is about everything with photos. We are a group of seven pupils and our leader Peter. Our aim is to document the whole journey. In the end we would like to make a great photo book for all members of this year’s journey to remember our adventure.

Why did you join this project in particular?
Because I love taking photos. There are so many beautiful moments I’d like to fix! And so incredible many things to photograph like sunrises or dolphins.

What are you doing at your weekly meetings?
Everybody shows the others a few of their photos of the last week. And we decide about our focus for the next week.

Sammy, what is your project about?
I’m in the project sailing characteristics of the Thor Heyerdahl. We explore the characteristics on board like sail-surface, speed of the wind and the different weather conditions. Our aim is to find the fastest way to sail. To find this out we made a grid for some statistics, which should be filled in every hour by the watch.

Why did you join this project in particular?
I’d like to learn more about sailing, because I’m fascinated by navigating by ship. I’m interested in natural sciences.

What are you doing at your weekly meetings?
We reflect the results of the last week and divide the different tasks in our group for the following week.

Max, what is your project about?
My project is the Thor-Choir. We’re preparing and covering songs for the birthdays of the members. Each person gets their own covered song. But we also sing at special ceremonies like “Mizzen sheet on“ or Christmas time. We try to write a song about the whole journey, too.

Why did you join this project in particular?
Because at home I almost play music in every free second! I love playing the guitar, drums and piano. I’ve already written some songs myself.

What are you doing at your weekly meetings?
We’re discussing what special ceremonies are in the next time so that we can prepare some songs for it. And if time is left we cover songs for the next birthdays or at the moment for Christmas.

Katharina, what is your project about?
I’m in the publicity group. We are working on a book for all KuSis. For that we collect the best quotations, poems and songs. Furthermore we write letters to our sponsors and news to a school in the Bretagne and for a newspaper.

Why did you join this project in particular?
I love writing, actually that’s it.

What are you doing at your weekly meetings?
There we decide who is going to write which text and talk about the topics these texts should contain.
Now at last to myself:
I’m a member of the project textile handcraft. Everybody in this group designs and produces their own product. Our aim is to multiply the clothes, bags or whatever we made, and sell them in the KuS-Boutique.
I chose this project, because I like designing things and being creative. I’ve got so many ideas and now I’m very happy to realize one.
At our weekly meetings we show the other members of our group what we’ve made the week before and talk about what each of us will do the week after.

We all have great fun in our groups and like the things we do for our projects.
